FAQ:

When should I get in touch if I’m interested in gardening or volunteering?

A: April. Plots are tilled once, by April 20th. Weeds grow quickly during the spring, so it’s important to keep your plot weeded if you aren’t planting right away. Call Jay Potter at 563 543 0924 to meet you on site and map out your plot.

How do I pay my plot fee?

A: A refundable $25 deposit required per plot at the beginning of each season in addition to plot fees. The deposit is refundable after November 20, if your plot is clear of all debris and plant waste by November 10. You can pay by check or cash at the White House during business hours (call ahead), or by phone with a credit card. 563 557 7292

Where does the food go?

A: To the gardeners

Is there water access?

A: Our water supply is limited to the green tank and it does not have a lot of pressure. Plant accordingly. The gardeners are responsible as a community to fill the tank from the pump near the site steward’s house. Please use the green tank as the first source of water for gardens. If the tank is in use, each garden plot is allowed use of the red pump for up to 30 minutes per day.

Please use care when using the red pump or the tank. Stretching garden hoses to their limit puts unusual wear and tear on the hoses and the connections. We do provide a few community hoses, but please be careful with them and leave them tidy for the next gardener.

Are the gardens organic?

A: Though not certified, since 1990 we have stewarded the gardens organically. We ask that gardeners not use non-biodegradable or harmful chemical pesticides.

Where should I put my garbage and recycling?

A: Please take debris with you off site.

How is the garden supported?

A: Funded by garden fees and by The Four Mounds Foundation

How many people are involved?

A: 3-4 non-gardeners

What’s needed?

A: Our mission is to provide available space to organizations, but we don’t have the staffing, tools, or support to support gardeners otherwise. Cooperation with the site steward (Bob) who calls the site his home is crucial to creating a welcoming community. We ask gardeners to please introduce yourself to Bob and be respectful to each other and to the site rules.
